Creating Something from Nothing

Creating Something from Nothing

Tribe Scribe here...coming at you on this Monday morning with an inspirational story of the beautiful creativity we are capable of and the pursuit of a lofty vision; essentially the creation of something from nothing. This notion is awesome. The beauty of creation is captivating. Stories like this steal our attention, and we don't mind it one bit. Today, I am going to share with you the story of Inge Wegge (25) and Jørn Ranum (22) and their adventure Nordfor sola (North of the sun).

These dudes spent nine months of the cold, Norwegian winter in the isolated and uninhabited bay of a remote, arctic island (known as the Lofoten Islands) on the coast of Northern Norway, facing the vast Atlantic Ocean. They spent their days surfing, snowboarding, and subsisting in a cabin they built of driftwood, stone, and sea debris. They brought with them nothing but clothes and surfboards. The entire journey was documented. They then created a short film entitled, Nordfor sola (North of the sun); a documentary about following a dream. In the film, they claim that "it all started as a crazy idea," but the message it sends makes perfect sense: "Go out and chase your dream," Wegge says. "Do what it is you're dreaming of." And try not to kill the planet while you're doing it.
We've written quite a bit about the idea of 'Less Stuff, More Happiness' as of late, and we've reflected on the liberating feeling behind taking only what you absolutely need with you and carrying it on your back in one single pack. Everything you need and nothing you don't want. Inge and Jørn stuffed their packs with provisions whose expiration dates had passed (rendering them free) and then carried it all back -- on foot. But the boys brought with them two items of utmost importance: their surfboards - perhaps their biggest motivation for the arctic adventure - because the remote bay holds a well kept secret; some of the worlds finest surfing waves. Check out some pics of their adventure (um, yeah...we know - it looks like a dream).
Watch the trailer for their award-winning film on the adventure. Nordfor sola has screened at the Nordisk Panorama Festival in Finland, the Canadian Surf Film Festival and the London Surf Film Festival. Give 'em a look on facebook while you're at it.
Perhaps the biggest lesson we can learn from Inge and Jørn is that they had a big dream and they worked hard to make that dream a reality; the dudes created something out of nothing. Literally. Since words fail to express how cool this notion is, I will simply say, this is freakin' rad! As entrepreneurs, we live for this notion and we love it. It's what fuels us...even when we are lacking energy due to our insanely abnormal sleep schedules (have to be honest, the caffeine helps too). For the Ethnotek crew, we strive to create a means for which to tell the stories of the incredible artisans, through the bags we design and produce, using them as functional storytelling vessels.
We believe our bags boost awareness of the world's most beautiful cultures...awareness leads to curiosity...curiosity leads to questions...questions lead to understanding; and we have learned from our traveling experiences that raising the understanding in the word is a very powerful mission. This is our dream. This is truly what keeps us going. Though, at times - as a small start-up - the busy-ness of the business consumes us and we forget that we are creating something from nothing. This is no small feat. After all, if it were easy, it wouldn't be worth doing.
What will you create today?
Create away,
